2010-11 Community Highlights

Service/Fundraising

·         Received from the Mo-Ark Kiwanis District the “Champions for Children” award for raising $100,000 and donating the proceeds to the Springfield-Greene County Park Board for the purchase of a universal play center for disabled and handicapped children and adults to be constructed in the Jenny Lincoln Park.

·         Recognized as a 2009-10 Distinguished Kiwanis Club.

·         Embarking on a joint Springfield Kiwanis Clubs project to raise money for the Discovery Center.

·         Adopter organization for City of Springfield’s Strategic Plan for Early Childhood Development (5-year commitment)

·         Young Children:  Priority One Project – The Kitchen’s Family Nurturing Center

ü  Flower planting on site

ü  Donations of Valentine, Easter and Christmas bags, school supplies, and every-day necessities

ü  Holiday and out-of-school parties with the children

ü  Christmas personal shoppers for children of families living in The Missouri Hotel

·         Adopt-a-Highway sponsor for section of Kansas Expressway and bus shelter on St. Louis Street.

·         Clothesline Project – provided clothing for children attending the Boys and Girls Clubs.

·         Christmas party for disabled children attending Delaware Elementary School—providing lunch and special gifts.

·         Salvation Army bell ringers during Christmastime

·         Made and donated Kiwanis dolls to the Children’s Miracle Network given to children for comfort or to help explain a medical procedure.

·         Sponsored and supported Kickapoo and Central High Schools Key Clubs.

ü  Presented a $1,000 college scholarship to Key Club student.

·         Sponsored the Boys and Girls Clubs Walkathon in June.

·         Held Cans for Kids food drive benefitting the Salvation Army.

·         Volunteered for the United Way Day of Caring, assisting The Victims Center with projects.

·         Sponsor of the new NW Greene County Kiwanis Club in Willard.

·         Assisted with registration for the Mid-Winter District Conference.

·         Hold yearly fundraising events—the 10k/5k Kiwanis Kick, Trivia Night, Silent Auction/Dinner at the Tower Club
